The Fitzgerald/Peterson Show

It was New Year’s Day 2012 and while many were tuned in to college football bowl games, die hard NFL fans were glued to their TVs for their team’s 16th game of the regular season.

Seattle Seahawks fans were anxious to see how the team would finish the year after a stellar second half of the season when they went to Arizona to take on the division rival Cardinals.

We all thought we were in for a real treat, but it turns out, it was the Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson show.

1st Qtr

The Cardinals got on the board first with the only score in the first quarter – a Chester Taylor 1 yard punch in to put the Cardinals up 7-0.

2nd Qtr

Seattle responded with a Steven Hauschka 43 yard field goal in the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter. 7-3 Cardinals.

Not to be outdone, Patrick Peterson returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Seahawks 31 yard line. He almost took it all the way, but Seattle’s Jon Ryan pulled him down just in time. Jay Feely came on and kicked a 41 yarder after their offensive drive stalled to put the Cards up 10-3 going into halftime.

3rd Qtr

Leon Washington kicked off the scoring in the 3rd quarter on a massive 48 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10-10.

The Cardinals answered with a touchdown of their own with John Skelton hitting Todd Heap from 13 yards out to re-take the lead 17-10.

4th Qtr

The 4th quarter started with another Feely field goal, giving Arizona a 10 point lead, making it 20-10.

Richard Sherman picked off a pass intended for Andre Roberts, giving Seattle a chance to get back into the game. After having one field goal attempt blocked by Patrick Peterson after that big interception by Sherman, Hauschka finally shot back with a 23 yarder, bringing the Seahawks to within a touchdown again. 20-13.

With 7:47 left in the game, the Seahawks tied it up at 20-20 after Tarvaris Jackson hit a speeding Ricardo Lockette for a big 61 yard touchdown pass.

It gave both teams plenty of time for at least one more drive each, but they both stalled, sending the game to overtime.

This is where things got dicey – Overtime

Seattle won the coin toss and got the ball first in overtime. Washington took the kickoff 47 yards and put the Seahawks on their own 40 yard line to start their overtime drive. That drive went nowhere and the Seahawks had to punt the ball away.

On the Cardinals next drive, Larry Fitzgerald stole the show again. Skelton threw a 26 yard completion to Fitzgerald who split 2 defenders to make the grab.

After converting a 4th down and getting to the Seahawks 37, Skelton threw another pass downfield to seemingly nobody when Fitzgerald came out of nowhere and made a signature circus one handed catch to save the play and the drive.

After Arizona rushed the ball to the 9 yard line, Feely came on and ended the game with a 28 yard field goal.

This game was battle for 2nd place in the division, which the Seahawks lost and ended up in 3rd in the NFC West. It would ensure Seattle the #12 pick the 2012 NFL Draft (which really didn’t make a big difference, because Seattle traded that pick down anyway).
